What you’ll need
- Your passport (each traveller needs their own ESTA)
- Email address and debit/credit card
- Address where you'll stay in the US
- Employment and contact details
Safety first
- Being approved doesn't guarantee entry – US border officers make the final decision.
- Never overstay 90 days on an ESTA; it can stop you using the scheme in future.
Step by step
-
Step 1: Check you can use an ESTA
British citizens can usually visit the US for up to 90 days for tourism or business under the Visa Waiver Program with an ESTA. If you've been refused before, have certain convictions, or have travelled to certain countries, you may need a visa instead – the application questions cover this.

Step 2: Use the official website only
Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov (or the official ESTA Mobile app from US Customs and Border Protection). Many look-alike sites charge far more for the same thing.
Next: step 3 -
Step 3: Apply at least 72 hours before you fly
Apply as soon as you book, and at least 72 hours before departure. Most decisions are quick, but some take longer.
Next: step 4 -
Step 4: Fill in the form carefully
Enter your passport details exactly as printed, answer every eligibility question honestly, and check spelling. Mistakes can mean refusal or a new application and fee.
Next: step 5 -
Step 5: Pay the fee
The fee is US$40 per application (since 30 September 2025). Your bank may add a foreign transaction charge.
Next: step 6 -
Step 6: Check your status and save it
Check your application status on the official site and keep a note of your application number. An approved ESTA lasts 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
Tips
- Got a new passport? You need a new ESTA – it's linked to the passport.
- Children need their own ESTA, including babies.
