Step by step

Step 1: Use the online service
Go to GOV.UK > Check your State Pension forecast and sign in (or create an account). You may need photo ID such as a passport or driving licence to verify your identity. You can also use the HMRC app.

Step 2: Read your forecast
It shows how much State Pension you could get based on your record so far, your State Pension age, and whether you can increase the amount – for example by working more years or filling gaps.

Step 3: Check your NI record alongside it
Follow the link to your National Insurance record to see which years are full or have gaps.

Step 4: Or ask by phone or post
If you can't use the online service and your State Pension age is more than 30 days away, call the Future Pension Centre or send form BR19 by post, and a forecast will be posted to you.

Step 5: Already claiming?
The forecast isn't available if you're already getting State Pension or have deferred it – contact the Pension Service instead (or the International Pension Centre if you live abroad).
