What you’ll need
- Your phone with your current SIM
- A new SIM or eSIM deal from your new network
Safety first
- Use up or move any pay-as-you-go credit first – it may not carry over.
- Keep any handset payments in mind: leaving an airtime contract doesn't end a separate device plan.
Step by step
-
Step 1: Check your contract
If you're still in a minimum contract period, you may have to pay early termination charges. Text-to-switch tells you about these before you go.
Next: step 2 -
Step 2: Text PAC to 65075
From the phone you want to switch, text PAC to 65075. It's free. You'll get your PAC code back by text, along with any charges you'd owe and your remaining credit if you're pay as you go. (If you don't want to keep your number, text STAC to 75075 instead.)
Next: step 3 -
Step 3: Choose your new deal
Pick your new network or SIM-only deal and order the SIM (or eSIM).
Next: step 4 -
Step 4: Give the PAC to your new network
Enter the PAC when you sign up or when the new SIM arrives, and pick a switch date if offered. Your PAC is valid for 30 days.
Next: step 5 -
Step 5: Wait for the switch
Your new network must complete the switch within one working day. Your old service ends automatically – you don't need to call to cancel.
Next: step 6 -
Step 6: Put in the new SIM
When the number moves across, put in the new SIM (or activate your eSIM) and restart your phone. Test calls, texts and data.
Tips
- If your phone is locked to your old network, it may not accept a new SIM – most phones are now sold unlocked, but check with your old network.
- Ofcom rules mean you can't be charged for a notice period that runs after you switch.
Questions people ask
Will I lose service during the switch?
There can be a brief interruption on switch day while your number moves across – avoid switching on a day you're expecting an important call.
What's the difference between a PAC and a STAC?
A PAC moves your number to the new network; a STAC ends your old service when you don't want to keep the number.
